|BiographyBorn in 1971 in the Karoo, Willie Jacobs grew up on a sheep farm. At an early age his drawings gained recognition in the local community. Life in the veld played a crucial role in developing an understanding of perspective, dimension and color harmony. He also developed the ability to visualize, an ability necessary for a life of portrait painting.
After matric and a distinction in Technical Drawing, he studied Electrical Engineering through the SAAF. During his Air Force years in Louis Trichardt, he started to develop his artistic talent. From the start portraiture was his main interest and still is today. In 2001 he left Louis Trichardt to pursue his dream of becoming a full time portrait artist.
In 2003 he became a member of AUS, in 2007 a member of The Portrait Society of America as well as the Portrait Institute of the internationally acclaimed portrait artist John Howard Sanden and recently a member of the WSSA.
Today he is an accomplished artist, portrait artist and teacher of portraiture both locally and abroad.
Subject Matter, Style, PhilosophyBesides being a portrait artist, he regularly accepts commissions also of landscapes, seascapes and still lifes of which some are larger than life. Painting mostly wet-into-wet ( alla prima ), his style leans towards being realistic-impressionistic. In painting and drawing he suggests detail to the viewer that is not visible. ”The viewer or art lover should be invited into the painting, into the painting process and even into the world of the model or subject,” is his philosophy. This can only be accomplished by impressionistic painting, suggesting depth and movement.
AchievementsPortraits in oil, pastel and charcoal successfully completed by Willie, can be found in boardrooms of corporate companies, universities and embassies in South Africa as well as Australia, United States, Netherlands, Belgium, United Kingdom, Israel and Dubai.
His portraiture workshops are highly in demand from the Cape to Northern Province as well as abroad .
He recently released his first instructional DvD on portraiture as a first of a series. The DvD is greatly welcomed by artists and public alike.
